Between each vertebra of the spine, there is an intervertebral disc. Without these discs, your spine could not function. Imagine bending and jumping without these shock absorbers between each bony vertebra. Even walking would be impossible. A non-surgical solution for a slipped disc, also known a herniated disc, is chiropractic treatment.

What Is the Makeup of a Spinal Disc?

Each disc is made up of a tough outer layer (the annulus fibrosus) and a soft, jelly-like center (the nucleus pulposus). When cracks in the outer layer of the disc occur, the inner material is able to push out. This can be the result of numerous causes.

Most people do not realize they have a herniated disc until they feel pain, which is not actually the disc. The pain is normally caused by the bulging or ruptured disc pressing on a nerve and can be felt in areas of the body away from the cause.

What Does Chiropractic Treatment for a Slipped Disc Include?

After scheduling an appointment for chiropractic treatment, your doctor will go through your medical history and perform a physical exam, orthopedic tests, and neurological tests. Your chiropractor will be on the look for a few things: intact reflexes, loss of muscle strength or muscle wasting, and loss of sensation along nerve path.

Do not be surprised if your chiropractor examines your neck if you come in with low back pain. What happens in one area of the spine can impact another area of the spine. This is why a chiropractor will examine the entire spine regardless of where the pain is located. This will help them determine what treatment will specifically be used to address your core problem. Chiropractic treatment could include:
  • Manual Therapy: Used for musculoskeletal pain and disability. Commonly includes kneading and manipulation of muscles, joint mobilization, and joint manipulation.
  • Spinal Manipulation: Shown to be a safe and effective tool for treating spinal disc problems, especially when combined with therapeutic exercises.
  • Therapeutic Exercises: Activity is necessary to maintain the exchange of fluids in the spinal structures and to reduce swelling that naturally occurs in the tissues and surrounding disc.
  • Flexion-Distraction: Involves the use of a specialized table that gently "distracts" or stretches the spine. This allows the chiropractor to isolate the affected area while slightly "flexing" the spine using a pumping rhythm.
  • Pelvic Blocking: Includes using cushioned wedges that are placed under each side of the pelvis. Exercises may be used to allow changes in mechanics to draw your disc away from the nerve it may be pressing.
